Time to Extend

Everyone I have some news....I have decided to extend here in the Middle East. What does extend mean? It means I plan on sticking around here in Iraq for a few extra months instead of going back with my unit next week. Why you might ask? Because I'm already here. Because I want to continue to make a difference. Because I rake in an extra $1000 a month for staying longer than required. Because my things are here. Because the longer I stay here, the longer my dwell time will be when I do get back to the States. That's why.

Besides, what do I have to come home to besides family and friends? I don't have anything to go back to. All my worldly possessions are locked away in a storage facility yet I've survived without them. I have lived a year without a cell phone, with limited internet connection, without cooking my own food. Why would I give all that up? Why would I want to be tied down by a cell phone....boy am I not looking forward to the day Verizon reactivates my account! So I ask you, why should I come back? I'll tell you why: Because I haven't seen my dog Ginger in over 2 years. Because I want to witness the birth of my nephew. Because I want to ride my new 2009 Ducati 848. Because I BOUGHT A HOUSE.....that's right, you read correctly....I bought a house.
It's been a long and delicate process over the last 4 months but the house is off the market, the sellers took my offer and I am taking full advantage of the poor housing market! As frustrating as it has been, particularly when my offer on a different house last month fell through to an earlier buyer, I have seen that it has been more of a blessing than I could have imagined. The last 4 months have seen hundreds of documents and forms printed, filled out, scanned and emailed back, offers and counteroffers, and initially it was all on my own, going in blind and basing my choice off photos. But two months ago, a friend of mine, Nate, from my church and softball league back in Virginia pointed me in the right direction. As it turns out, another of my friends in VA also from my church as well as on my softball team (a team that is waiting on baited breath formy triumphant return to the lineup) is a licensed realtor! It has been awesome working with Jason getting everything lined up and going above and beyond his job description to become the next George Lucas by actually filming properties to post on youtube.com for me to view back here. So after a long and arduous 4 months of looking from the other side of the world, my search is over!

The house I bought is....well as Goldilocks would put it "It's just right." 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 1720sq ft. and a large yard for Ginger! (photos below) I decided I didn't want to move back to Newport News where I lived before deploying and chose to live in the more 'upscale' city of Williamsburg. I am very excited to move in....on August 4th, 2009....wait a tick, I know what you're thinking:
"Didn't he say he was extending? I thought he said he was extending. Let me scroll up to see if he said he was extending."
*short pause*
"He DID say he was extending. He LIED!" <-- this is true, I did lie as I am not extending.

I did think about it at various points throughout this deployment but realized that the things I want to come home to outweigh the thought of sticking around here longer. So, by this time next week I'm leaving on a jet plane and I know what time I'll be back again! It has been a process but I have everything lined up, cell phone is set to be turned back on August 3rd, my PODS with all my things will be delivered to my doorstep on August 4th, I pick up my fully paid for 2009 Ducati 848 on August 4th, do an official walkthrough of my house and sign the dotted line on August 4th! It is a great feeling to have all these things lined up for my return and I cannot wait!

Just one more week in this Dust Bowl and I am back where I belong!!
